Executive coaching and psychotherapy have differences and similarities. Psychotherapy can assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms as coded in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V). They are both helpful in supporting the client in developing the needed internal resources to overcome obstacles. Coaching is also different in that it is even more specifically task and skill oriented, around client career goals. This, of course, also involves the working through of relational issues, as all work involves interaction with others. While feelings still get looked at and handled in coaching, there is much more of an action orientation. While the client takes responsibility for decisions that get made in the process of coaching, there is a directive stance offered to the client. Coaching covers a wide range of topics but always concerns itself with the continued development of the client and how the client is helping others to develop was well. Nurturing leadership potential is a key component to executive coaching. On occasion the task at hand in the coaching will call on the use of psychotherapeutic processes whereby I explicitly get the consent of my client to participate in such a process. By the fact that I am a licensed mental health professional, I can continue working with my coaching client through the more psychotherapeutic process portion of the work. Some of my long-standing clients choose to work with me in both processes. This is something that we explicitly discuss and agree on after looking at any potential concerns about combining both processes in one professional relationship. This works very well for clients who have been in therapy already with me or other practitioners, are emotionally stable and developed, and are continuing their self exploration as they seek deeper and deeper self understanding as they relate to others, both in their personal and work lives.
